Web-based Virtual Reality Environments

4. Testing VR equipment

The XR environments that you create in A-Frame can be experienced through different devices: desktop/laptop computers, smartphones, or VR devices.

Desktop

On a desktop/laptop computer, you just open the preview window and experience the environment as if it were a game: you can use the directional arrows on your keyboard (or the 'a', 'w', 's', 'd' keys) to move your point of view inside the 3D scene along with your mouse to change where you look at.

Smartphone

On a smartphone, you open your smartphone's browser (ideally Google Chrome or Firefox) and enter the published/preview address of your file or project (Figure 1).

On a smartphone, you have the option of starting the environment in AR (augmented reality) or VR (virtual reality) modes. In AR mode, the smartphone will turn on its camera, allowing you to view your physical space along with the virtual elements of your 3D scene. In VR mode, your smartphone will render two different views of your 3D scene -- one for each eye. In VR mode, you should place your smartphone inside a VR enclosure such as the one in Figure 2.

VR Device

On a VR device like the Meta Quest 3, or Pico 4, you open the device's web browser and enter the published/preview address of your project. When the page loads, you will see both AR and VR buttons at the bottom right of the browser's window. Click the Vr button to enter immersive VR mode on your A-Frame environment (Figure 3).
